When building a climbing wall, it’s essential to prioritize safety and proper construction techniques. Here’s a step-by-step guide to a typical traverse wall project:
1. Planning the Climbing Wall:
Determine the available space according to the location.
Work with client to decide on the climbing wall’s size and design considering user’s climbing abilities, the space available, and budget.
2. Design the Climbing Wall:
Create a detailed design that includes the climbing wall’s angle, holds placement, and route setting.
3. Purchase Project Materials
High-quality plywood sheets, typically 3/4 inch thick, for the climbing surface.
Climbing holds of various shapes and sizes to create routes and problems.
T-nuts for installation into the plywood to secure climbing holds.
Framing timber – typically 2×4 or 2×6 timber for framing the wall.
Screws, nuts, and bolts.
Wall paint designed specifically for commercial climbing walls.
Safety equipment such as helmets and harnesses.
4. Build the Frame:
Construct a sturdy wooden frame 2×4 or 2×6 timber.
Attach the frame to the wall using anchors or wall brackets for stability.
5. Attach Plywood Panels:
Cut plywood panels to the desired size and attach them to the frame ensuring they are securely fastened and level.
Drill holes for T-nuts on the plywood at regular intervals, ensuring they align with the holds’ positions.
6. Install T-Nuts and Holds:
Insert T-nuts into the holes you drilled in the plywood. These will be used to secure climbing holds.
Arrange climbing holds on the wall according to the agreed design, attaching them with bolts and nuts through the T-nuts.
Ensure the holds are tightened securely and that they’re comfortable to grip.
7. Safety Precautions:
Install safety mats* or padding at the base of the climbing wall to cushion falls.
Regularly inspect and maintain the climbing wall and holds for safety.
8. Start Climbing:
With the climbing wall complete and safety measures in place, users can now start climbing and enjoying the climbing experience.
